Paralyzed on one side, unable to speak, and terrified, Nathan was rushed to hospital, confronting a reality far harsher than any television challenge.
Determined not to be defined by his functional neurological disorder (FND), Nathan had joined the show to prove, first to himself, then to the world, that he could take on a brutal “cat-and-mouse” survival challenge despite his condition. Being the first contestant eliminated stung, but he believed that chapter of his life was finally behind him.
That belief shattered during what should have been a joyful moment: a spa trip for his wife’s 40th birthday. Within hours, Nathan was surrounded by flashing blue lights, paramedics, and chaos. What followed was three months in hospital: relearning how to walk, talk, and navigate everyday life again. From hospital bed to Zimmer frame to wheelchair, each step was a battle—but Nathan refused to give in.
Despite the severity of his episode, Nathan emphasizes that the show wasn’t to blame. “The crew acted immediately when I seized on set,” he says. “They saved me. I can’t fault them.” In fact, his experience on the show gave him valuable insight into pushing boundaries safely and showing others that chronic illness doesn’t have to mean invisibility.
