Donald Trump’s push to end birthright citizenship is turning heads—and it could affect far more people than many realize.
The former president signed an executive order aiming to end automatic U.S. citizenship for children born on American soil if their parents are in the country unlawfully or on temporary visas. That includes tourists, international students, and workers on short-term visas, according to Al Jazeera.
If enforced, this would directly challenge the 14th Amendment, which has guaranteed citizenship to anyone born in the United States since 1868.
Beyond Undocumented Immigrants
While much attention has focused on undocumented families, the order’s reach goes further. Children born to temporary visa holders would also be excluded from automatic citizenship. Pew Research reports that in 2022 alone, around 1.2 million U.S. citizens were born to undocumented parents—potentially putting them in the crosshairs of this new policy.
Connecticut Attorney General William Tong spoke out strongly, saying:
“The 14th Amendment says what it means, and it means what it says – if you are born on American soil, you are an American. Period. Full stop.”
