Natural Ways to Keep Snakes Away From Your Home
Snakes have always fascinated—and sometimes scared—humans. While they’re crucial for keeping rodents and insects in check, most people prefer their gardens, porches, and living areas snake-free. Luckily, there are safe, natural ways to discourage snakes without harming them.
Why Scents Work
Snakes rely heavily on chemical sensing through a specialized organ rather than sight or hearing. Strong smells can overwhelm their senses and encourage them to move along.
Ammonia: Its sharp, pungent odor can make an area uncomfortable for snakes. Place small amounts near entry points, sheds, or crawl spaces. But be careful—ammonia evaporates quickly, must be reapplied often, and can be harmful to pets and children. Never use it indoors.
Essential Oils: Cinnamon, clove, lemongrass, and citronella oils contain compounds that temporarily overstimulate snakes’ chemical receptors. Mix with water and spray around foundations, doorways, or garden edges. Rain or humidity may reduce effectiveness, so frequent application is key.
Garlic and Onions: These release sulfur-based compounds when crushed, producing strong odors snakes dislike. Planting marigolds can also help—by repelling insects, they reduce rodent populations, which are a primary food source for snakes.
