Brandon’s face went pale, the color draining as if someone had pulled a cord inside him. Lauren gasped softly, her hand clutching her swelling belly, while I sat frozen, gripping the arms of the leather chair as the weight of Miriam’s words sank in. The room felt suddenly smaller, tighter, like the walls themselves were closing in on his carefully constructed world.
“You… you can’t do this,” Brandon stammered, his voice cracking, a faint tremor betraying the first hint of fear I had ever heard from him. “Miriam… she wouldn’t—she didn’t—”
