Five years ago, I believed I had already lived through the hardest chapter of my life.

My marriage had ended without warning or mercy. Derek didn’t simply leave—he dismantled everything. Stability, trust, the future I thought we were building. When he was gone, it was just me and my teenage son, Josh, trying to rebuild something from the ruins in a small apartment near Mercy General Hospital.

Josh was sixteen then. Quiet. Thoughtful. Still carrying the kind of hope children don’t know how to let go of completely—the hope that a parent might come back. I saw it in how often he checked his phone, in the way he stopped asking questions he already knew the answers to.

We were surviving.

Or at least, I thought we were.


The Day Everything Changed

It started like any ordinary afternoon. Laundry. Routine. Silence.
