The dog looked like he didn’t have much time left. Tied to a crooked fence behind a worn-down barn, he stood weak, underfed, and barely holding on. Mud clung to his fur, his ribs showed through his thin frame, and one paw bent awkwardly as if it had never healed properly. An empty bowl nearby made it clear he had been neglected for a long time.
Most people would have walked past, but Lily Harper didn’t. At just thirteen, she stopped in the rain and locked eyes with the exhausted animal. There was something in his expression—not fear or aggression, but a deep, quiet fatigue—that she understood instantly.
Her grandfather urged her to leave it alone. The dog needed care they might not be able to afford. It could be dangerous. It might not even survive. But Lily had already decided.
