The morning in Black Hollow started like any other—gray skies, empty streets, and a soft drizzle that made the whole town feel half-asleep. Officer Eli Mercer was halfway through a routine patrol when something unusual pulled him out of habit.
A sound.
Not loud. Not urgent. Just a small, fragile whimper coming from the edge of a foggy alley.
He slowed down, scanning the damp street. That’s when he saw it—a German Shepherd puppy stepping out from the mist.
Soaked. Shivering. Alone.
But there was something different about this one. He didn’t run. He didn’t hide. He just stood there, staring at Eli with an intensity that didn’t match his size.
Then, carefully, he moved closer.
The puppy sniffed Eli’s hand, pressed against it for a moment… and then suddenly turned away, stopping a few feet ahead as if waiting.
It wasn’t random. It felt intentional.
And when Eli took a step back toward his vehicle, the puppy whined and looked over his shoulder again.
He was leading him somewhere.
A trail no one expected
Eli radioed dispatch and followed.
The puppy moved quickly through narrow alleys and muddy paths, constantly checking to make sure he was still being followed. Eventually, he led Eli and arriving Deputy Lena Ortiz behind old buildings and toward a drainage area on the outskirts of town.
There, partially hidden in the brush, they found a torn handbag and scattered personal items.
Something had gone wrong here.
The search widened immediately.
