Without thinking it through, I spoke up loudly enough for nearby tables to hear. “Think about your baby,” I said, believing I was addressing a situation that needed concern and protection. For a brief second, everything around me seemed to pause. Her expression didn’t show shock as much as frustration, the kind that comes from being misread in a deeply personal way. And with a calm but cutting clarity, she responded: she wasn’t pregnant at all, just wearing an oversized jacket.

In an instant, the narrative I had constructed in my head collapsed.
