A devastating industrial fire in central Greece has left the country in shock after a blaze tore through a biscuit manufacturing facility near Trikala, resulting in the tragic loss of four workers. The incident unfolded in the early hours of the morning and prompted a large-scale emergency response as firefighters battled intense flames and thick smoke.
Authorities have confirmed that the cause of the fire is still under investigation, while efforts continue to support the families of the victims and assess the full extent of the damage.
How the fire began
The fire broke out around 4:00 a.m. at the Violanta biscuit factory, located roughly 200 miles north of Athens. Emergency services were alerted after flames were spotted inside the industrial complex during the night shift.
At the time of the incident, 13 workers were inside the facility. According to official reports, eight managed to evacuate safely, while four workers were later found dead after firefighters gained access to heavily damaged sections of the building. One worker was initially reported missing during the early response efforts.
Emergency crews respond
The Hellenic Fire Service launched a major operation, deploying around 40 firefighters and 15 fire engines to the scene. Crews worked for hours under extremely difficult conditions, navigating unstable structures and dense smoke to bring the fire under control.
Authorities established safety perimeters around the factory to protect nearby areas. Several individuals, including at least one firefighter, were taken to hospital for precautionary medical checks. Officials have confirmed that those affected received prompt care.
Company response
Violanta, the company operating the factory, issued a public statement expressing deep sorrow over the tragedy. It confirmed the fire occurred during the night shift and emphasized that the exact cause remains unknown.
