The retail pharmacy landscape is undergoing a dramatic transformation, and Walgreens is now at the center of that shift. Once a familiar fixture on nearly every major street corner, the company is now facing a wave of financial pressure, changing consumer habits, and aggressive competition that is reshaping how—and where—people buy everyday essentials and prescriptions.
According to recent announcements, Walgreens plans to close approximately 1,200 stores over the coming years as part of a large-scale restructuring effort. By 2027, this will amount to roughly one in seven of its current locations disappearing from neighborhoods across the country. In the near term alone, around 500 stores are expected to shut down within the next year, signaling how quickly the company is moving to stabilize its operations.
