Firefighters Warn Against Plugging These Items Into Power Strips

As colder temperatures arrive, millions of households are pulling out space heaters to stay warm during the winter months. While these portable heaters can provide comfort and convenience, fire safety experts continue warning that one common mistake could quickly turn dangerous.

According to fire departments and electrical safety organizations, plugging a space heater into a power strip or extension cord can significantly increase the risk of overheating and house fires.

The warning has circulated for years, but safety officials say many people still remain unaware of the danger.

Why Power Strips and Space Heaters Can Be a Dangerous Combination

Back in 2017, Umatilla County Fire District #1 in Hermiston, Oregon, shared a warning on social media that quickly spread across the internet.

Their message was simple but urgent:

Never plug a space heater into a power strip.

The department even posted photos showing melted and damaged power strips caused by overloaded electrical current.

According to firefighters, most household power strips are not designed to handle the large amount of electricity required by space heaters. When overloaded, they can overheat, spark, or even catch fire.

The warning quickly gained attention online, with thousands of people sharing personal stories involving overheated outlets and close calls inside their homes.

Space Heaters Can Reach Extremely High Temperatures

Safety experts explain that many portable space heaters can reach temperatures between 500°F and 600°F during operation.
