Rosie stood in the middle of our kitchen, practicing the same dance step again and again.

Her silver shoes tapped softly against the tile.

“One-two-three, turn,” she whispered.

I sat at the table with a cup of tea I had stopped drinking nearly an hour earlier.

“Mom,” she asked, looking over at me, “am I doing it right?”

I smiled.

“You’re doing it beautifully.”

Her face brightened, and she spun again.

Rosie had mosaic Down syndrome. To most strangers, it wasn’t obvious right away. But kids at school noticed enough to make her feel different. And some of them had spent years making sure she never forgot it.

There had been small things at first.

A ripped sleeve she said got caught on a locker.

A stuffed bear ruined with marker.

Lunches eaten alone.

Quiet tears she tried to wipe away before I could see them.

Every time I asked how school had gone, she gave the same answer.

“Fine.”

Just fine.

But now, somehow, she was getting ready for prom.

And not just going to prom.

She had been asked by Steven Parker.

The star quarterback.

The boy everyone cheered for on Friday nights.

Three weeks earlier, Steven had come to our front door holding one white tulip. He stood there in his letterman jacket, nervous but polite, and looked Rosie straight in the eyes.

“Rosie,” he said, “would you go to prom with me?”

I was so shocked that I answered before she could.

“Yes.”

Then I immediately apologized and stepped back so Rosie could answer for herself.

Her hands flew to her mouth.

“Yes,” she whispered.

When my sister Megan heard the news, she cried.

“She deserves something good,” she told me. “Please let her enjoy it.”
