During the 18th and 19th centuries, wealthy women often wore elaborate dresses featuring layers of fabric, corsets, lace, and intricate fastenings. Getting dressed was rarely a quick, independent task. Many affluent women relied on maids or personal attendants to help them put on their clothing each day.

Because most people were right-handed, dressmakers often placed buttons on the wearer’s left side. This made it easier for a maid standing opposite the woman to fasten the garment efficiently. Over time, the design became associated with wealth, refinement, and high social standing.
