The phone rang at exactly 6:17 p.m.

I remember the time clearly because I had just sat down with a cup of tea. For one quiet second, everything felt normal. Then the call came.

“Are you Emma Collins’ mother?” a man asked.

My stomach tightened.

“Yes,” I said.

His voice stayed calm, but there was urgency behind it.

“Your daughter was in a car accident. She was hit while leaving work. I helped get her out and brought her to the emergency room. You need to come now.”

The cup slipped from my hand and smashed across the kitchen floor.

I didn’t stop to clean it. I didn’t even look down.

I grabbed my keys and drove to the hospital with shaking hands, barely aware of the road in front of me.

When I arrived, the emergency room felt too bright, too loud, too unreal. Nurses moved quickly through the halls. Machines beeped. The sharp smell of antiseptic filled the air.

A doctor met me near the waiting area.
