The ink on my divorce papers had barely dried when I made a phone call that marked the beginning of a completely different chapter in my life.

My ex-husband, Ethan, stood only a few feet away, convinced he had walked away from the marriage as the winner. Confidently straightening his jacket, he even offered me what he described as “a little help” to get back on my feet—a check for $25,000.
I almost laughed.
