My mother-in-law stayed behind on vacation with a man she had known for less than a week.
Five days later, my phone rang at 12:47 in the morning.

I tried not to laugh.
Over the next few days, Valerie and Russell spent more time together. They walked along the beach, shared meals, and explored the area.
For the first time in a long while, Valerie looked genuinely happy.
But Owen remained concerned.
Russell had rented a cottage farther down the coast for another month, and shortly before our flight home, Valerie announced that she had decided to stay there for a few more days.
Owen was stunned.
“You’ve known him for three days.”
