Shopping carts are part of everyday life, and most customers use them without giving their handles a second thought. However, past reports of sharp objects found in shopping cart handles have highlighted the importance of reporting potential hazards and maintaining safety in public spaces.
Although these incidents are concerning, it is important to distinguish documented cases from claims suggesting a new or widespread trend.
In July 2018, Cheryl and Mel Johnson reported finding a razor blade protruding from a shopping cart handle at a Walmart store in Wadsworth, Ohio. According to local news coverage, Mel sustained a minor cut after coming into contact with the blade. The couple notified store management, and Walmart said it inspected the carts at that location.
A separate incident occurred that same month at a Walmart in East Windsor, Connecticut. A shopper named Kelly Boulay reported cutting her finger on a blade concealed in a shopping cart handle. Police investigated, and store employees checked other carts but did not find additional blades during that inspection.
These were separate reported incidents in different locations. They should not be combined into a single event or presented as evidence of a newly emerging nationwide threat.
Yes. In June 2015, a razor blade was reported inside the handle of a shopping cart at a Walmart in Bismarck, North Dakota. Police investigated the report, but the available coverage stated that no one had been injured in that incident.
Additional reports involving shopping cart handles appeared in later years, including an incident in North Carolina in 2019 in which police said blades had been found on several carts.
These cases show that hazardous objects have occasionally been discovered on shopping carts. However, individual reports do not establish how frequently such incidents occur across all retailers or indicate that every shopper faces an elevated risk.
