Gary Sinise, beloved actor and tireless advocate for veterans, has shared heartbreaking news: his son, McCanna Anthony “Mac” Sinise, has passed away at 33. Mac’s journey was defined by courage, creativity, and unwavering resilience in the face of a rare and incurable disease that he battled for over five years.
In 2018, the Sinise family faced a devastating double blow. Just three months after Mac’s mother, Moira, was diagnosed with stage-three breast cancer, Mac received his own diagnosis: Chordoma, an ultra-rare bone cancer affecting roughly one in a million people annually. While Moira’s treatment brought hope and remission, Mac’s path was grueling. The cancer, originating near his spine, led to multiple spinal surgeries and eventually paralysis from the waist down.
Despite the immense physical toll, Mac refused to let his life be defined by illness. He remained deeply involved with the Gary Sinise Foundation, assisting with education and outreach programs for veterans and first responders. At the same time, music became his anchor. A USC graduate in songwriting and composition, Mac was a gifted percussionist and composer. He performed alongside his father in the Lt. Dan Band, uplifting troops around the world. Even after losing the ability to play the drums, he poured his energy into composition and arranging, crafting a final musical project that would become his lasting legacy.
