I’ve never been one to leave my desk for lunch. Between deadlines, emails, and back-to-back meetings, eating at my workstation was just part of the daily grind. My desk sat near the big office window, and honestly? Watching traffic crawl below while I ate was the only peace I got all day. Fifteen minutes of calm, right there.

Then Clara joined our team. She sat beside me, radiant and organized, full of energy and strict vegan principles. On her first day, she smiled and said, “I don’t eat animal products.” I nodded politely—no big deal.

For weeks, we coexisted peacefully. She nibbled on salads; I rotated between pasta, chicken, and the occasional stress-busting burger. Life was simple.

Until yesterday.

It was one of those chaotic afternoons. I’d skipped breakfast, morning meetings ran late, and by lunch, I was starving. I ordered a cheeseburger with fries from the diner across the street. The smell was heavenly. I tore open the wrapper and took a deep breath of relief.

Clara froze mid-typing. She turned toward me, face serious.
