The courtroom was crowded that morning. Lawyers whispered among themselves, people waited impatiently for their cases to be called, and the judge examined the papers on his desk.
Then the doors opened, and a 15-year-old boy was led into the room.
His clothes were worn, his shoes were damaged, and his eyes remained fixed on the floor. He looked frightened, as though he had already decided that nobody would believe him.
The charge against him seemed simple: theft.
He had taken a bundle of bread and a small piece of cheese from a local grocery store. When the security guard tried to stop him, the boy struggled to escape. During the commotion, a shelf was knocked over and several items fell to the floor.
The store owner wanted him punished.
But before delivering a verdict, the judge decided to ask a few questions.
“Did you take the bread and cheese?” he asked.
“Yes, sir,” the boy answered quietly.
“Do you understand that stealing is against the law?”
“Yes, sir.”
“Then why did you do it?”
The boy hesitated. His fingers tightened around the edge of his shirt.
“Because I was hungry,” he finally said.
The judge studied him for a moment.
“You could have bought the food.”
“I had no money, sir.”
“Did you ask your family for help?”
The boy swallowed hard.
“I only have my mother. She's sick, and she hasn't been able to work for weeks. I wanted to bring her something to eat.”
A murmur passed through the courtroom.
The judge leaned forward.
“And what do you do for a living?”
“I wash cars near the market. Sometimes people pay me, sometimes they don't. I usually bring home enough for a little food. But yesterday, my mother became weaker, so I stayed with her. I couldn't earn anything.”
“Did you ask anyone for help?”
The boy nodded.
“I asked at two shops. I asked a man outside the market. I even asked someone who was eating at a restaurant. Everyone told me to go away. I didn't know what else to do.”
