“Do you really want to do this?” I asked.

“Do what?” he snapped.

“Take a side before you know the whole story.”

Sloan let out a sharp, disbelieving laugh.

“What story? You threw my bag into a fire!”

She wasn't wrong about that.

My actions had been deliberate, and I wasn't going to pretend otherwise. Destroying her property was not a reasonable way to handle a disagreement.

But there was something she still didn't understand.

The cake had not been the beginning of this conflict. It was simply the moment when years of patience, months of tension, and one deeply hurtful afternoon finally collided.

And I had a reason to believe the cake hadn't fallen by accident.

The Evidence I Had Kept to Myself

I looked directly at Sloan.

“You want to know why I don't believe what happened to the cake was an accident?”

For the first time since the confrontation began, she said nothing.

The fire crackled between us.

Harrison frowned.

“Mom, what are you talking about?”

I reached into my pocket and pulled out my phone.

“I have something you need to see.”

I unlocked the screen.

Sloan took a small step backward.

It was a subtle movement, but I noticed it immediately.

Her expression changed, and for a brief moment, the confidence she had carried all afternoon seemed to disappear.

I held the phone in my hand and looked from Sloan to my son.

For the first time, I wondered whether Harrison was finally about to see a side of the situation he had spent months avoiding.

Because the next thing I showed them could change the way they understood everything that had happened.

And judging by Sloan's reaction, she already had a good idea of what was on that screen.

What do you think Lorraine should do next? Was her reaction understandable, or did she cross a line? Share your thoughts in the comments.
