Lifestyle “Dad! What are you doing?”
My voice came out louder than I expected.
My father, George, turned around so quickly that he nearly dropped the little plastic cup in his hand. Emily was sitting in the bathtub, her eyes wide with surprise, while the bathroom floor was covered with bubbles.
For one terrifying second, I couldn’t move.
My father looked at me, then at Emily, and finally at the small object he was holding.
“Sarah? What’s wrong with you?” he asked.
I barely heard him.
“Get away from her,” I said, stepping into the bathroom.
Dad immediately stood up and moved aside. He looked confused, almost offended.
“Your daughter and I are just playing a guessing game.”
I rushed to Emily and wrapped a towel around her.
“Sweetheart, are you okay? Did Grandpa hurt you? Did he touch you anywhere you didn’t want him to?”
Emily stared at me, frightened by the sudden change in my voice.
“No, Mommy.”
“Did he ever tell you to keep a secret from me?”
She hesitated.
My heart pounded so hard I could hear it in my ears.
Then she looked at my father and whispered, “But Mommy, you ruined the surprise.”
I froze.
“What surprise, sweetheart?”
Emily pointed toward the bathroom counter.
“That one.”
I slowly turned my head.
Sitting beside the soap was a small pink gift bag. Inside it, I could see a folded piece of paper, a little ribbon, and something wrapped in tissue paper.
My father rubbed his forehead.
“I was trying to do something nice,” he muttered.
But I wasn’t ready to believe anything yet.
“Then why did you tell her to close her eyes? And why did you say she shouldn’t tell me?”
Dad opened his mouth, then closed it again.
For the first time in my life, I saw something in his expression I had never seen before.
Fear.
Not anger. Not irritation.
Fear that I had misunderstood him.
“Sarah,” he said quietly, “please let me explain.”
I took Emily out of the bathroom and dressed her. I asked my father to wait in the living room while I spoke with her privately.
I didn't want to put words in my daughter's mouth, so I kept my questions simple.
“Sweetheart, tell me about the game in your own words.”
