It was the middle of the night when I suddenly jolted awake with the unmistakable feeling that something was biting into my skin.

At first, I couldn't even tell what had woken me. I was lying in bed, half-asleep and disoriented, when I felt a strange, sharp pressure against my back. It wasn't the ordinary discomfort of a twisted bedsheet or an awkward sleeping position. It felt as though something small, hard, and unpleasant was pressing into me—and possibly moving.

My heart began pounding.

I froze beneath the blanket, trying to understand what I was feeling. Had an insect crawled into my bed? Was something clinging to my clothes? Or had some tiny creature managed to get trapped between my skin and the bedding?

The more I thought about it, the more convinced I became that something was wrong.

I quickly reached behind my back, hoping to brush whatever it was away. Instead, my fingers touched a small, hard object. Its unusual texture made me recoil, and suddenly I was wide awake.

I threw back the blanket and scrambled to switch on the bedside light.

For a moment, I expected to see an insect scurrying across the mattress or some other unwelcome creature hiding in the sheets. But there was nothing obvious. The bed looked perfectly ordinary, the pillows were where they belonged, and the room was just as quiet as it had been before I woke up.

That somehow made the situation even more confusing.

If there was nothing in the bed, what had I just felt against my skin?

I began examining the sheets, pulling back the blanket and running my hands over the fabric. I checked the area around my pillow, shook out the covers, and inspected my clothing. Every small crease suddenly looked suspicious. I was no longer interested in going back to sleep until I knew what had caused that strange sensation.

Then I found it.

The tiny object was small, brownish, and surprisingly hard. Its edges were uneven, and under the bright light, it looked strange enough to make me question what I was holding.

I turned it over between my fingers, trying to identify it.

It didn't look like an ordinary piece of lint. It wasn't immediately recognizable as a seed, either. Its rough surface and irregular shape made it seem like something that might have come from an insect or another small creature.

And because it had been pressed against my back while I was...

I called for help.
