Why Sudden Symptoms Should Be Taken Seriously

A person who suddenly struggles to walk may need prompt medical attention, particularly if the change is unexplained.

Sudden difficulty walking or loss of coordination can sometimes be a sign of a stroke or another serious medical emergency.

Other warning signs may include facial drooping, weakness or numbness on one side of the body, difficulty speaking, sudden vision changes, confusion, or a severe unexplained headache.

If these symptoms appear, contact emergency services immediately. Do not wait to see whether they disappear.

In France and elsewhere in the European Union, 112 is the general emergency number. In other locations, use the appropriate local emergency number.

Even when other warning signs are absent, a sudden and unexplained inability to walk safely warrants urgent medical evaluation.

How Bystanders Can Help Safely

When someone appears unsteady or has difficulty walking, a calm and considerate response can help reduce the risk of further harm.

Here are several useful steps:

1. Check whether the person is responsive. Speak calmly and ask whether they need help.
