His breakthrough arrived in 1963 with hits like \u201cThe Gypsy Cried\u201d and \u201cTwo Faces Have I.\u201d But it was 1966\u2019s smash \u201cLightnin\u2019 Strikes,\u201d co-written with longtime collaborator Twyla Herbert, that shot him to the top.
