Pope Leo XIV has officially declined an invitation from former President Donald Trump to join his proposed \u201cBoard of Peace,\u201d citing serious concerns about the initiative\u2019s structure and its role in international diplomacy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Vatican confirmed the decision this week through Cardinal Pietro Parolin, who explained that the Holy See could not participate in a project that might override established multilateral institutions like the United Nations. \u201cFor us, there are some critical issues that should be resolved,\u201d he said, emphasizing that crisis management at the global level should remain the domain of the UN.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Despite the ambitious plans, Vatican officials have expressed unease over the board\u2019s legitimacy. A proposed membership roster has drawn diplomatic criticism: Vladimir Putin, still waging war in Ukraine; Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, amid the Gaza conflict; and former UK Prime Minister Tony Blair, whose support for the 2003 Iraq war remains controversial. This decision also reflects the ongoing tension between Pope Leo XIV and the Trump administration. Since his election, the Pope has openly questioned policies on immigration and human rights, calling for humane treatment of migrants and emphasizing dialogue over militarized approaches. \u201cA diplomacy that promotes dialogue and seeks consensus among all parties is being replaced by a diplomacy based on force,\u201d he said in January, warning against the resurgence of a global \u201czeal for war.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
