It’s a life just beginning, a story that deserved so many more chapters.

On February 17, a young girl from Alabama died by suicide, leaving behind a message her parents hope might help save another child’s life one day.

A child who stood up for others

The family of Lindsey Mae Swan, a bright and caring 12-year-old from Huntsville, Alabama, is now speaking publicly about her loss. They hope that by sharing her story, other families might recognize warning signs sooner and protect their own children.

Lindsey—affectionately known as “Sweet Pea” and “Stitch”—was remembered as someone who defended others, especially those who were too afraid to stand up for themselves.

“She always stood up for people who couldn’t speak up, and she wouldn’t let anyone push around her friends or siblings,” her mother, Brittany Booth, shared.

She was a student at Mountain Gap Middle School, active in choir, part of the Girls Engaged in Math and Science (GEMS) team, and involved in children’s theater where she was preparing for a role in The Lion King. Lindsey also loved volleyball, gymnastics, dance, hiking, the beach, and caring for animals.

Her life was full—but it wasn’t without pain.

Hidden struggles

Lindsey lost her father, Joseph Laughery, four years ago, and her mother says that loss deeply affected her.

“That created a lot of heartache for her,” Brittany explained.

At school, she also faced bullying. According to her family, other children used her father’s death to hurt her—something her mother described as deeply upsetting.

Even with everything she carried, Lindsey tried to comfort others. Her mother remembers how Lindsey could sense when something was wrong and would step in with kindness and support.

Tragically, months before her death, Lindsey had confided in friends about her intentions. Her mother believes that if an adult had been told, it might have changed the outcome.

A final message meant to help others

In her last journal entry, Lindsey left a message her family now shares in hopes of raising awareness:

“It’s too late for me. Please talk to someone even if they act or look OK. They might make it because of you.”

Her stepfather, Jason Booth, says shame often prevents people from speaking openly about mental health struggles.

“People are afraid to talk about it,” he said. “But we need to have these conversations, even with young kids. If you notice something, speak up.”

A broader issue affecting millions

Lindsey’s story reflects a larger crisis affecting young people across the United States.

Data from the Alabama Department of Public Health shows the state ranks among the highest in the country for teen suicide, with nearly 1 in 12 high school students reporting an attempt. Risk levels are even higher among LGBTQ youth.

Nationally, the National Alliance on Mental Illness reports that millions of teens experience suicidal thoughts each year. Suicide remains one of the leading causes of death in the U.S., with tens of thousands of lives lost annually.

Experts emphasize that talking openly about mental health and suicide does not increase risk—in fact, it can help prevent tragedies by encouraging people to seek help.

A reminder to notice and speak up

Lindsey’s life, though short, left a powerful impact on everyone who knew her. Her story is a reminder that even children who appear strong, kind, and capable may be struggling silently.

Her family hopes that by sharing her message, others will pay closer attention, ask questions, and take action when something doesn’t feel right.

Their wish is simple: that no other family has to endure the same loss.

Rest in peace, Lindsey.

If you or someone you know is struggling, support is available 24/7 through the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline by calling or texting 988. Reaching out and speaking up can make a life-saving difference.

Suicide is always devastating—but when it involves a 12-year-old child, it feels almost impossible to comprehend.
