The senior officer turned slightly, trying (and failing) to hide a smile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Margaret waved her hand. \u201cI said I thought<\/em> I left it at home. Turns out it was right here all along. From myself.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n One of the backup officers chuckled under his breath.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The rookie sighed. \u201cMa\u2019am, you also implied you stole it from a man at a gas station.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Margaret leaned in again, whispering dramatically, \u201cTechnically, I did<\/em> meet a man at a gas station once\u2026 in 1972. He became my husband.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n At that point, even the senior officer laughed out loud.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The rookie rubbed his forehead. \u201cMa\u2019am, you can\u2019t say things like that. You had us thinking this was a stolen vehicle situation.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Margaret smiled innocently. \u201cWell, you did ask a lot of questions. I just gave you\u2026 creative answers.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n The senior officer stepped forward, still amused. \u201cAlright, Margaret, let\u2019s keep things simple from now on.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n She nodded. \u201cOf course, officer. Simple is good.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n The rookie looked at his notes, then back at her. \u201cOne last question, ma\u2019am\u2026 why were you speeding?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Margaret didn\u2019t miss a beat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cOh, that\u2019s easy,\u201d she said. \u201cAt my age, I don\u2019t buy green bananas\u2026 and I don\u2019t drive slow either.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n The entire group burst out laughing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The senior officer shook his head. \u201cAlright, ma\u2019am. I\u2019m letting you off with a warning\u2014but please keep it under the speed limit.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Margaret started the car, smiling. \u201cDon\u2019t worry, officer.
