The blackberries came in July, thick on the canes behind the shed, and I stood out there with a bucket and cried into the brambles because she’d taught me to pick with the flat of your hand so you don’t crush them, and I could hear her saying it. I made eleven jars. I put them in the cellar and I didn’t enter the county fair. It didn’t feel right, the first year without her.

Carol — my husband’s mother — entered anyway. Under her own name.

I found out when my neighbor Ruth called me, breathless, from the exhibition hall. “June, you need to get down here. Carol just won Best Preserves and she’s holding up a jar of — honey, it’s your mama’s jam. I’d know that color anywhere.”

The jar on the blue-ribbon table had my mother’s handwriting on the label: “Blackberry Jam.” Underneath, Carol had scratched out Mama’s year and scrawled a new one in her own shaky hand.

I drove to the fairgrounds with my hands shaking on the wheel. There she was by the preserves table, holding that ribbon, telling the Hendersons how she’d “finally perfected” the recipe. She saw me coming and her smile didn’t move. “June! Did you see? First place!”

“That’s Mama’s jam, Carol.”

“Linda gave me the recipe years ago,” she said smoothly. Too smoothly. “She’d want it to win.”

My mother never gave Carol that recipe. Carol had asked for it every Christmas for a decade, and Mama always smiled and said, “Some things a woman keeps.” After the funeral, Carol went through Mama’s kitchen “to help me sort.” That’s when she took the card.

Here’s what Carol didn’t know. Mama’s recipe card had a lie in it — on purpose. It said two cups of sugar. The real recipe used one cup of sugar and a spoonful of blackberry-leaf tea, brewed strong. Mama told me when I was sixteen: “If anybody ever steals this card, they’ll make jam that tastes like candy and wonder what went wrong.” She’d winked. I’d thought it was funny then.

The head judge was Mr. Abernathy, who’d judged preserves for twenty years and who’d given Mama five blue ribbons. He came over while Carol was still talking, picked up the winning jar, and tasted it with the little wooden spoon. He looked at Carol for a long moment.

“Interesting,” he said. “Linda’s jam never tasted like this.”

Carol’s smile finally cracked. “Well, I — I made a few adjustments—”

“Did you?” He set the jar down. “Because this tastes like somebody followed a card and missed the whole point.”

He didn’t disqualify her on the spot. He didn’t have to. Half the exhibition hall was listening, and by suppertime everybody at the fair knew. Carol left before the pie auction. She hasn’t spoken to me since, and my husband — caught between his mother and his wife — has been sleeping on the couch of his own choosing, which tells you everything about where the guilt sits.

This August, I entered eleven jars under my own name. Mama’s real recipe. I won, and when Mr. Abernathy handed me the ribbon his eyes were wet, and he said, “Tastes like Linda.”

That night I sat at Mama’s kitchen table and copied the true recipe onto a hundred index cards — the real one, leaf tea and all. At Christmas, every jar I give away will have one tucked under the ribbon. Some things a woman keeps. But some things, once somebody tries to steal them, you give away free so nobody ever has to steal again.

My mother-in-law won a blue ribbon with my dead mother’s jam, and smiled at me from the stage like we’d planned it together.

[10

post-29589","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-lifestyle
["GET
