You can help\u2026 but you have to be nice to our house.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And so we worked\u2014slowly, crookedly, laughing and sniffling and learning each other\u2019s rhythms.<br>Marlene clipped the wooden angel to the porch rail like it belonged there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When the lights finally flickered back to life, she whispered, \u201cFor a moment\u2026 it feels like they\u2019re here.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMaybe they are,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On Christmas Eve, she came to our door wearing her nicest sweater and carrying store-bought cookies like an offering.<br>Ella grabbed her hand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou came!\u201d<br>\u201cYou said there would be cookies,\u201d Marlene replied, flustered.<br>\u201cYou sit next to me.
