Recently, rescuers in Nova Scotia discovered a truly remarkable case: a completely hairless raccoon surviving in the wild.

Last month, the team at Hope for Wildlife, a conservation nonprofit, was alerted when a couple in West Arichat found a tiny creature shivering in their backyard. At first glance, it looked like a hairless Sphynx cat—but a closer look revealed something extraordinary. This was a northern raccoon…without a single strand of fur, except for small tufts around her snout, feet, and ankles.

The rescue confirmed it was one of the most severe cases they had ever seen. Director Hope Swinimer told The Canadian Press, “It’s just tufts of fur…we’ve had balding raccoons before, but never anything like this.” Despite her vulnerable state, the raccoon—affectionately named Rufus, after the cartoon naked mole rat—had managed to survive the harsh winter entirely on her own.

<kbd>Facebook/Hope For Wildlife</kbd>

While the exact cause of her hair loss is still unknown, specialists suspect a rare autoimmune condition. Parasites, mange, and fungal infections were ruled out, and her skin appeared healthy—remarkable for a wild animal exposed to freezing temperatures.

Even more amazing was her personality. Swinimer described Rufus as “feisty,” noting that she quickly recovered after arriving at the shelter. Her survival was a testament to her resilience and determination.

Rufus may now become a permanent resident at Hope for Wildlife.
