Ryleigh passed away from rhabdomyolysis, a rare condition that breaks down muscles and affects roughly one in 200,000 people in the UK.

Coroner Alan Wilson of Blackpool and Fylde revealed that doctors failed to notice critical warning signs during her treatment. After a five-day stay at Blackpool Victoria Hospital, Ryleigh was discharged despite showing a lack of mobility and other concerning symptoms. Tragically, she died three months later.

Reports indicate that Ryleigh’s blood tests had shown extraordinarily high levels of Creatine Kinase—a key indicator of muscle injury or disease. Despite this, doctors initially attributed her condition to a chest infection or hepatitis. Observers noted that the little girl appeared slow, floppy, and lethargic, yet these warning signs were not properly investigated.

The coroner has requested evidence from the doctors involved in her care at Blackpool Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust. Medical negligence attorney Diane Rostron emphasized that specialist advice should have been sought. “The hospital was given clear guidance to consult a neuromuscular specialist,” Rostron stated. Had this step been taken, Ryleigh could have been diagnosed with rhabdomyolysis, and her family given the chance to explore life-saving treatment options.

The tragedy highlights the critical importance of vigilance, specialist consultation, and careful monitoring in pediatric care. Ryleigh’s death is a stark reminder of how rare conditions require expert attention to prevent unnecessary loss.

Our thoughts are with Ryleigh’s family.
