The Charges: Conspiracy and Obstruction
Filed in Washington, D.C., the indictment lists four major felony charges:
- Conspiracy to defraud the United States
- Conspiracy to obstruct an official proceeding
- Obstruction and attempted obstruction of an official proceeding
- Conspiracy against rights — specifically, the right to have one’s vote counted
Prosecutors allege that Trump led a coordinated effort to subvert the 2020 election through lies, manipulation, and pressure on state and federal officials. Central to the case is the claim that he knowingly spread false claims of voter fraud, despite repeated warnings from advisers, intelligence officials, and members of his administration. The indictment outlines a multi-state plan to block Congress’s certification of the Electoral College vote on January 6, 2021, when a violent mob stormed the Capitol.
While Trump isn’t directly accused of inciting that violence, prosecutors argue his actions were part of a broader conspiracy to undermine democracy itself.
