Christa Gail Pike’s scheduled execution in Tennessee was expected to bring an end to a decades-old death-penalty case.
Instead, the procedure became an extraordinary national news story after the lethal-injection attempt failed.
Pike, 50, had been scheduled to be executed on September 30, 2026, for the 1995 killing of 19-year-old Colleen Slemmer. The execution would have been Tennessee’s first execution of a woman in more than 200 years.
But what happened inside the execution chamber was very different from what officials had expected.
