For most of my life, people thought they understood me after learning just one thing.

They never asked about my grades.
They never asked what I read late at night.
They never asked what I hoped to become.

They only needed to know where my mother worked.

My name is Evan Miller, and I grew up as the son of Ridgewood’s sanitation worker.
