Early Life and Childhood Struggles
Born Elizabeth Alice MacGraw on April 1, 1939, in Pound Ridge, New York, Ali was the daughter of two artists. Her mother, Frances, was an accomplished painter and teacher, while her father, Richard, had survived a traumatic childhood in an orphanage before studying art in Munich. Richard carried deep anger from his past, which sometimes turned violent at home. Ali recalls witnessing her brother Richard Jr. being physically abused, creating a childhood marked by tension and hardship.
