Tragedy on Highway 57: One Dead, Dozens Injured in Northern Mexico Bus Crash

Before dawn broke over northern Mexico, silence turned to chaos along Highway 57 near the Hermanas–Sabinas stretch — a road notorious for sharp curves and unpredictable winds. It was early Wednesday morning when tragedy struck: a long-distance passenger bus, Unit 9132, traveling from Ciudad Acuña to Gómez Palacio, Durango, lost control and overturned at kilometer 68.

When first responders arrived, the bus was lying on its side — a mangled shell of metal and glass. Many passengers had been asleep during the rollover. By sunrise, one person was confirmed dead and over 30 others injured, among them a young boy fighting for his life.

Local residents were the first to react. Truck driver José Ramos, who stopped to help, described the horror. “People were screaming,” he said. “We broke the windows with rocks to pull them out. It was chaos.”

A Desperate Rescue Effort

Emergency units from Sabinas, Monclova, and Piedras Negras, alongside the Red Cross and the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS), worked through the morning to free those trapped inside. The most critical victims were airlifted to hospitals in Monclova and Saltillo. Among them was a child named Jairo, suffering severe head and internal injuries. Doctors at IMSS Clinic 7 said his next 48 hours would be crucial.
