Train Carrying More Than 244 People Derails in Southern Mexico, Killing 14 and Injuring Nearly 100

Context of the Interoceanic Train

The Tren Interoceánico is a flagship infrastructure project inaugurated in 2023 under former President Andrés Manuel López Obrador. It aims to modernize the rail link across the narrow Isthmus of Tehuantepec, connecting Pacific and Gulf ports as a potential alternative corridor to the Panama Canal for freight, while also offering passenger service. The rolling stock includes refurbished second-hand locomotives and cars acquired from the United States and the United Kingdom. The line has experienced several earlier incidents, though this was the first with multiple fatalities.

Survivors later recounted concern about the train’s speed on curves in the mountainous section. In the months after the crash, authorities announced plans to correct several curves, including the one involved in the accident. A subsequent derailment occurred in the same area in mid-2026 with no reported casualties.

The December 2025 derailment remains one of the more serious passenger rail accidents in Mexico in recent years, highlighting ongoing challenges of infrastructure, operations, and safety oversight on newly revived rail corridors in the country’s south.
