Poland is in shock following the tragic death of Major Maciej Krakowian, one of the nation’s most skilled pilots and leader of its elite F-16 display team. The accident occurred around 7:25 p.m. local time during a routine training flight ahead of the 2025 Radom International Air Show.
Authorities confirmed that Major Krakowian, an instructor at the 31st Tactical Air Base near Poznań with over 1,000 flight hours on the F-16, died instantly. Known for his precision, daring maneuvers, and mentorship, Krakowian was a beloved figure in Poland’s aviation community.
Earlier this year, he received the prestigious “As the Crow Flies” trophy at the Royal International Air Tattoo, honoring his “best overall flying demonstration.” Fans and colleagues remember him not only for his skill in the cockpit but also for the passion and discipline he brought to every flight.
Circulating footage shows the F-16 executing a steep, high-speed maneuver before losing control and crashing into the runway, erupting in a massive fireball. Emergency responders arrived immediately, but it was too late. The jet was performing an advanced aerobatic exercise in preparation for the air show, a routine Major Krakowian had mastered. The cause of the crash is still under investigation.
