Even with decades of research and advanced technology, the human body still holds mysteries that stump scientists. And one of the most surprising? Our ability to subconsciously sense when death is near.
Recent research reveals that when a body begins to break down, it releases putrescine, a toxic compound with a foul odor produced during decomposition. While we may not consciously notice it, our brains react instantly. Scientists suggest this reaction is rooted in survival instincts, much like animals avoiding danger.

Two researchers—Arnaud Wisman from the University of Kent and Ilan Shira from Arkansas Tech University—found that humans respond to putrescine both consciously and subconsciously. Experiments show that when people are exposed to this odor, they instinctively move away, a reaction strikingly similar to how animals react to threats in their environment.
