When Alex Simpson was just two months old, her parents, Shawn and Lorena, received news that would change their family’s life.
Their daughter had been diagnosed with hydranencephaly, a rare neurological condition in which much of the brain’s cerebral hemispheres does not develop normally and is replaced by fluid.
The diagnosis brought uncertainty and difficult questions about Alex’s future. According to her family, doctors initially gave them a very limited outlook and warned that she might not survive beyond early childhood.
