Marcus stared at the darkness beyond the airplane window.
For a few seconds, he didn’t move.
He listened.
The engines were still running, but something about the sound had changed. The steady rhythm he’d heard during takeoff was gone. The aircraft seemed heavier somehow, as if the entire plane were fighting to remain on course.
Then the captain spoke again.
