It was late.
I was exhausted.
All I wanted was to climb into bed, pull the blanket over my head, and forget about the day.
Then I lifted the edge of the duvet.
And froze.
Something pale and strangely shaped was lying directly where my head was supposed to be.
Thin, delicate strands stretched across the fabric in every direction.
For one exhausted second, my brain jumped to the worst possible conclusion.
What on earth was that?
My Brain Went Into Overdrive
The room was dark enough that I couldn’t make out the details.
The strange shape looked almost alive.
Those thin extensions resembled tiny legs, and suddenly every horror story I’d ever heard seemed to be playing inside my head.
Was it some bizarre insect?
A spider?
Something that had somehow found its way into my bedroom?
I didn’t know.
And I definitely wasn’t interested in finding out by touching it.
So I stood there.
Staring.
The object didn’t move.
That should have been reassuring.
Somehow, it wasn’t.
The Light Changed Everything
Eventually, I realized I couldn’t spend the entire night standing in the doorway.
I took a cautious step toward the bed.
Then another.
Finally, I reached over and switched on the brightest light in the room.
The mystery immediately looked less terrifying.
But I still couldn’t tell exactly what I was seeing.
So I grabbed my phone.
If I couldn’t figure it out with my eyes, maybe the camera could help.
I leaned closer, zoomed in, and took several photographs.
Then I stared at the screen.
And that’s when the mystery began to unravel.
It Wasn’t an Insect
I looked again.
Then blinked.
Those strange “legs” weren’t moving because they weren’t legs.
There was no creature hiding underneath my blanket.
No mysterious spider.
No strange parasite.
No midnight infestation.
It was a seed.
Somehow, a tiny seed had ended up beneath the duvet.
And under the right combination of warmth and moisture, it had started to sprout.
Those creepy-looking strands weren’t legs at all.
They were young roots.
The little seed had apparently found a surprisingly cozy place to begin growing.
Unfortunately for the seed, that place happened to be my bed.
