The ocean can sometimes produce patterns that look almost too perfect to be natural. One of the most fascinating examples is the phenomenon commonly called square waves, in which waves traveling from different directions create a distinctive crosshatched pattern on the water.
Although the appearance can be unusual, the phenomenon has a natural explanation. These patterns can occur when two wave systems move across one another at different angles. From above or from a distance, the intersecting waves can create lines that resemble a grid or a series of squares.
The sight can be beautiful, but it is important not to judge ocean conditions by appearance alone.
