“Stop.”
The single word cut through the yard.
Travis froze.
It wasn’t loud. It didn’t need to be.
Claire’s voice had changed.
The softness that Sophie knew as her mother’s voice was gone. So was the hesitation everyone had mistaken for fear.
What remained was calm, controlled authority.
Travis stared at her.
For the first time that afternoon, he seemed unsure of himself.
Claire took one step forward.
“You were given a warning.”
Grant laughed nervously from beside the grill.
“This is ridiculous. He’s just trying to defend his pride.”
Claire didn’t look at him.
“This stopped being about pride when you brought my daughter into it.”
The yard remained silent.
Then Claire reached into her purse and pulled out her phone.
“I recorded the threats before you threw the first punch.”
Travis’s expression changed.
“So did three of the people standing behind you,” Claire continued. “And several of the neighbors have already called the police.”
One of the MMA fighters lowered his eyes.
Another quietly removed the gloves from the grass.
Grant’s face hardened.
“You think some recording is going to scare us?”
“No.”
Claire looked directly at him.
“I think evidence is going to explain what happened.”
Sirens could be heard in the distance.
Sophie remained beside Mr. Palmer, exactly where her mother had told her to stand.
Claire glanced at her daughter.
“Are you okay?”
Sophie nodded.
Then, after a moment, she asked the question she had been holding inside.
“Mom… why did you know exactly what to do?”
