I had spent years watching my son Nathan stay on the edges of school life.
He was intelligent, thoughtful, and kind, but extremely shy. While other students seemed comfortable in large groups, Nathan was usually happiest with a book, a school project, or a small circle of friends.
So when Madison, one of the most well-known girls at school, approached him in the cafeteria and asked him to prom in front of everyone, my first reaction was concern.
