Grandma’s First Flight to Florida Took an Unexpected Turn—Then She Silenced the Entire Cabin
At 86 years old, Grandma Rose had never seen the ocean.
So when I finally had a good year financially, I decided to give her something she had dreamed about for most of her life: a trip to Florida.
She was hesitant at first.
“Becca, you don’t need to spend your money on me,” she said.
I smiled. “I’m not spending it on you. I’m spending it on us.”
Her eyes lit up.
“Do you think we’ll fly low enough to see the mermaids?”
I laughed. “Only if the plane lands in the ocean.”
She grinned. “Then I hope the pilot is adventurous.”
Neither of us knew how memorable that flight would become.
The Seat That Started Everything
Because I booked the trip late, Grandma and I couldn’t get seats together.
She was assigned to 24B, while I was several rows behind.
When we reached her row, I immediately noticed a problem.
The woman in the window seat had spread herself across much of the middle seat. Her handbag occupied part of the space, and she seemed completely uninterested in making room.
“Excuse me,” I said politely. “That’s my grandmother’s seat.”
The woman barely looked up from her phone.
“I paid for the window seat.”
“I understand, but you’re taking up part of the middle seat.”
She shrugged.
