A Dark Painful Spot on a Child’s Foot Needs a Closer Look

A parent noticing a large, dark, painful spot on a child’s foot can feel torn between waiting it out and rushing for help. A mark like this may turn out to be a simple blood blister from friction or a minor injury, but pain, swelling, color changes, or trouble walking are signs that it should not be judged from a photo alone.

Feet take a lot of impact, especially for active children. Running, tight shoes, sports, playground equipment, or stepping on something can injure small blood vessels under the skin while leaving the surface intact. When that happens, blood can collect beneath the skin and create a blister that looks dark red, purple, brown, or almost black.

That does not mean every sudden dark spot is harmless. If the area is large, very painful, getting worse, or making it hard for the child to move normally, it is safer to get medical advice the same day rather than waiting several days to see what happens.

Why It Might Be a Blood Blister

A blood blister forms when the skin is pinched, rubbed, or hit hard enough to damage tiny blood vessels underneath. Because the outer layer of skin stays closed, the blood becomes trapped below the surface.
