She Came Home After Four Months—Then Saw the Shoes by the Door

Clara had imagined coming home a hundred different ways.

After four long months away on business, she pictured herself unlocking the apartment, dropping her bags, and filling the kitchen with the smell of a homemade dinner. She imagined Julian smiling when he saw her. She imagined Leo running toward her.

She didn’t want a grand welcome.

She wanted something simple.

She wanted to feel that her family had been waiting for her.

That was why she hadn’t called ahead. She wanted to surprise them.

Her grocery bag held fresh vegetables, a piece of meat, and a few small treats she knew Julian and Leo liked. They weren’t expensive gifts, but to Clara they represented something bigger: a small attempt to step back into the family life she had temporarily left behind.

Then she reached the apartment door.

And stopped.

There was no music inside.

No television.

No footsteps.

Not even the familiar sounds of someone moving around the kitchen.

Clara knocked.

Once.

Then again, harder.

Nothing.

A strange uneasiness followed her as she unlocked the door.

The apartment was silent.

Too silent.
