A Safe California House Seat Is Suddenly in Play

Rep. Julia Brownley’s decision not to run for another term is more than a routine farewell from Capitol Hill. Her retirement opens a rare political opportunity in a Ventura County district long viewed as safely Democratic, giving the party a chance to elevate new leadership in a seat that could have been held for many more years.

Brownley said she is leaving Congress, but not public service. In her announcement, she made clear that the issues that shaped her career will continue to matter to her, including work tied to her community and the country more broadly.

A Longtime Democratic Seat Enters a New Phase

For years, Brownley represented a district where Democrats have held a strong advantage. That makes her departure especially important inside the party, because open seats in politically secure districts often attract ambitious candidates looking for a path to Congress.

California Assemblymember Jacqui Irwin has already expressed interest in the seat, and other potential candidates are expected to take a look as the race develops. With no incumbent on the ballot, the contest could become one of the more closely watched Democratic succession fights in California.
